Your life in a nutshell – It is what you celebrate
“Well, it’s not like it’s a big deal.” He said, in his usual tone when he doesn’t understand why I am saying what I am saying.
“I disagree,” I said, “this is your life happening. It deserves a picture.”
My husband and I were talking about his being sworn in as a Meadowbrook Township supervisor. It’s a 10 minute process of “do you promise to…” and signing some paperwork. By all intents and purposes, not a big deal… except to me, it is. As are most things in life… because folks, this is life happening.
I am the weirdo that orders prosecco (I am not a big champagne fan) with dinner for a variety of things in life. You graduated, cheers, you got a new position at work, cheers, you got rid of that co-worker who’s been a pain in your ass and dragging your department down for the past two years, cheers, you finally finished that book series you’ve been reading for the past year, cheers. When my granddaughter entered “womanhood,” I took her out to dinner to celebrate, cheers. I love to celebrate life!
I understand that for most people life just ambles with nothing noteworthy happening from day to day… except the vast majority of our lives is what is happening in our day to day, so if you perceive your life as nothing is noteworthy… then that is your life in a nutshell… nothing noteworthy.
Ick.
Folks, the day to day is where the juice is happening. The little moments of life are the very things that comprise your life as a whole. Sure, we focus on the big moments; holidays, weddings, babies, huge accomplishments that other people are impressed by, as well as the other side of the coin – break-ups, losses, etc. but truly, your LIFE is a compilation of your day to day.
Life is in the little things. In the end there will be a few major events, but years of day to day.
Celebrate and acknowledge all of it. Your toenail healed over, cheers. That horrible, did not suit you well, hair color finally washed out, cheers, you just got sworn in to community service in some guy’s barn… cheers. I want a photo.
Life itself is noteworthy. Take the pictures, toast the occasion, make it a little deal if not a big deal. It is indeed a “deal.”
Celebrate. Your life will be what you celebrate, what you acknowledge and what you find noteworthy.
Bring on the prosecco…or whatever, just celebrate. You’re creating your life here.
Forever the journey, Anne
